Grauman's Chinese Theatre

Address:
6925 Hollywood Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90028
Priority:

It was once stated that “to visit Los Angeles and not see the Chinese is like visiting China and not seeing the Great Wall.” Grauman’s opulent, awe-inspiring presence and history has been a cornerstone of Hollywood for over 75 years.
The grand opening of Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood on May 18, 1927, was the most spectacular theatre opening in motion picture history. Thousands of people lined Hollywood Boulevard and a riot broke out as fans tried to catch a glimpse of the movie stars and other celebrities as they arrived for the opening. The film being premiered that night was Cecil B. DeMille's “The King of Kings,” which was preceded by "Glories of the Scriptures," a live prologue devised by master showman Sid Grauman. A Wurlitzer organ and 65-piece orchestra provided music for the prologue. The theatre opened to the public the following day, May 19, 1927.

Hollywood Walk of Fame

Address:
Hollywood Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90027
Priority:

This tourist attraction, a celebrity-seeker's favorite, consists of personalized brass stars embedded in the pavement. Paying tribute to famous industry figures, the medallions were first installed at the corner of Highland Avenue and Hollywood Boulevard in 1960. Since that time, more than 2000 other famous and not-so famous names have been added to the walk. However, recognition doesn't come without a price – each personality must pay $15,000 for the honor. Celebrity stars indicate the individual's area of specialty with one of five symbols: a motion picture camera, a radio microphone, a television set, a record, or a theatrical mask. Located on both sides of Hollywood Boulevard (from Gower to La Brea) and on both sides of Vine Street (from Yucca to Sunset).
Where to Start
Hollywood at Highland(Hollywood Blvd & N Highland Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90028) This shopping-and-entertainment complex is also a tribute to Hollywood history. Starting from Hollywood Boulevard, walk up the simulated "red carpet." Read the Hollywood stories set into the walk in mosaic. They're quotes from people who came to make their fortunes in Hollywood, from camera operators to mega-stars. Pillars topped with elephants tower over the main plaza, recreations from the set of D. W. Griffith's classic movie Intolerance. Walk to the back of the complex to lounge on the oversized casting couch and get a photo of the Hollywood sign.
Shopping is optional here, but do make a small purchase to get your parking ticket validated.

Hollywood Sign

Address:
34.133991,-118.321831
Priority:

The Hollywood Sign is a famous landmark in the Hollywood Hills area of Los Angeles, California, spelling out the name of the area in 50 feet (15 m)[1] high white letters. It was created as an advertisement in 1923, but garnered increasing recognition after its initial purpose had been fulfilled.[2] The sign was a frequent target of pranks and vandalism but has since undergone restoration, including a security system to deter vandalism. The sign is protected and promoted by the Hollywood Sign Trust, a nonprofit organization whose purpose is to physically maintain, repair and secure the sign, to educate the world about its historical and cultural importance, and to raise the funds necessary to accomplish these projects.
Take a good picture:
- Get closer. If you want a photo of yourself in front of the sign, you need to take Canyon Drive or Bronson Avenue all the way up to the sign.
- Go shopping. The mall at Hollywood and Highland affords a good view of the Hollywood sign. Bring a camera with a good zoom lens and try different angles.

Venice Beach

Address:
33.9764,-118.466745

Priority:

The most interesting and popular sight in Venice Beach is the beach, but it's not the surf and sand that take center stage here. It's the lively sidewalk scene. Venice Beach is a place where you'll find artists, palm readers and bikini-clad rollerskaters mixing with chanting, saffron-clad Hare Krishnas and wriggling belly dancers.
